1975-1976 Shop Rite on Union Ave Rutherford N.J.

This was the place in town to get the ultimate part time job. Here you had to join a Union and once you got in you got nice pay checks after that. You could even earn overtime here. I worked here as a grocery clerk . This was the biggest Department, then you had Meats, Produce, Frozen Foods, and the Front End. I liked the Grocery Department because it had the widest array of products with the broadest range of duties. Bill Murphy was the Grocery Manager, and Domenick Morose his assistant. Bill would inventory the store each night and write pull lists for each aisle. Then we would pull out cases of merchandise on the list and stack it on trucks that went to the aisles. Then we would uncase each item stamp it with a price and put it on the shelves. After that we would block down the aisles so all merchandise is on the front edge of the shelf with the labels facing forward. Sometimes when Bill and Domenick were off. I would be the one to write the pull list for the grocery section. Surges in customer demand would cause overtime because of the large quantities of stock needed to replenish the shelves. Because of this I worked many times until 11 PM. 1976 was my last year in High School. I was 18 now and I dropped out after the eleventh grade was completed. I did finish that school year with maximum scholastic honors. I returned to NYC and Shop Rite installed a night crew. There was no more overtime for the Part Timers anymore.
